Yeah, I’m a fan of Jim Kukral’s – what’s it to ya?
Anyway, Jim’s got a great video (3:21) about what in the dickens possessed him to give away his hard-won online video knowledge for free and what he’s gotten out of the process. It’s way more than you might think:
- Potential book deal with a major publisher
- Speaking gigs
- Consulting gigs
Hey, for 30 days, that ain’t half bad, Jim!
So, when you’re thinking about your next online marketing strategy, not only do you need to be talking to Jim, but you also need to think bigger and think free.

After years of very traditional software sales, we decided to give away the latest version of our award winning content management system for free as well. Beyond speaking & consulting engagements, there’s often an opportunity to create add-on or re-packaging products that have dramatically reduced marketing costs if you’re giving the “secret sauce” away for free.

@Franz:
Good for you for recognizing the power of “free”.
It takes a long time for companies to realize that not everything has to result in a revenue stream and most times when you give — you get back in spades.

I agree that the “power of free” can result in a large amount of indirect revenue. Currently, I am focusing on using internet marketing to monetize my blog. The best strategy that I have witnessed for achieving such a goal is to write and give away free information that will add value for the customer. Lastly, I would like to point to the article titled “Asian Invasion” in the June 28th edition of The Economist. It reinforces the fact that companies are increasingly using the “power of free” strategy to gain revenue.

Yes, we totally agree with the power of FREE! However, if you apply “FREE” as a marketing strategy, you need to be patient enough to be paid off

To paraphrase the Joker in, “The Dark Knight” :
“Never do something you’re good at for free.”
